Q: How exactly does it function? Is this the thing being connected to tube amplifier?

zuma06 from what I can tell, this would rectify the high voltage AC from a transformer to high voltage DC for the vacuum tube (valve) plates. to give you the authentic "sag" that tube rectifiers produce. as opposed to more efficient solid state rectifiers.

Q: do these need external battery? there does not seem to be batteries in gloves.
