A feather board's purpose is to exert lateral force on the workplace into the fence. To do this it needs three things. 1. A rock-solid point to Index off of (the miter slot) and 2. Stiffly rigid, but still slightly malleable fins or "feathers" and 3. a means of tightening it firmly to fit your Workpiece dimensions. The lack of both the bar and the knob kill items 1 and 3, and the flimsiness of the remaining build suggests to me that even if you add your own, it will only work for a short time, and that only because the full structure will flex, not just the fins. Maybe you're thinking that is fine. It's affordable, right? Just remember: kickbacks carry about half the force of a 9mm round at point blank. How much would YOU trust it?
