  • NeilonAegina Thanks for the information... I cannot see the end of your message what battery did you use and what charger?

  • chocksaway I have one of these I purchased it years ago.  It was a very simple matter to unplug the AA battery tray and pop in a LiPo. I now use that battery tray for charging my NiMh AA cells.  To charge the LiPo, open the bottom sliding door, pull out the LiPo and charge it, seems pretty logical.

To be blunt, completely forget about doing the changeover this way.  After you've plugged and unplugged that connector a dozen times the pins will work loose and you could be looking at a very badly burnt transmitter.  Those plugs are NOT designed for connecting to LiPos.  Far better to use a deans plug and socket or XT-60 types.

Also the best mod for those transmitters is to remove the voltage regulator and fit an after market one.  It almost halves the power consumption.  I can't recall the type number of the new voltage regulator, but a simple search on YouTube for mods to this transmitter will find it for you. Another good mod is the channel expansion.  BangGood sold the parts you needed to do this mod, but I'm not sure if it's still available.  I just checked and it is still available, just search for GT3B Expansion.  It gives you 6 channels.

As for the battery, I always use a 1800Mw 3S.  AS long as you've done the regulator mod you won't have any problems.  Using a 3s in an unmodified GT3B could cause a burnout owing to a 3s delivering over 14 volts when freshly charged.  I have heard of a couple of them burning out the power input stage, it's not going to happen to them all, but I assure you it can, if you're unlucky.

The charger is the easy one.  Throw away those horrible little black boxes with a couple of LEDs and buy the much more professional and inexpensive charger with a digital readout.  There are many available and the majority of them use the identical motherboard.  I've used the cheap clones and the more expensive brands and to be honest I've had more luck with the cheaper versions.

Try this one:  iMAX B6-AC B6AC Lipo NiMH 3S RC Battery Balance Charger   It has an inbuilt power supply for only a few dollars more than the one without.  I'm using one of them and have been for about 2 years without any problems.  Just don't expect to charge half a dozen 6s LiPos in a row on 4c.  I charge ALL my LiPos at 1/2c that's Half A C. It takes twice as long, but it's much kinder to the battery.  I have many LiPos which are over 24 months old and still packing a punch.

There are better chargers on the market with pretty coloured digital displays, I own a couple of them, but keep going back to the older types. I find them much tougher with their metal bodies, I've had two of them in my field box for years, they've taken a beating, but they've never let me down. Out in the middle of nowhere running the two of them off my car battery and keeping my LiPos topped up.

That reminds me, I should start thinking about selling off all the chargers I've received with planes, boats, cars and quadcopters, I've got a Big box of them about to overflow.
